CosmoWhirl Orb is a flame-worked borosilicate glass piece built around a genuine opal center. Using Czech-made SIMAX glass, silver-and-gold fuming, and step-by-step color layering, each orb forms its own inner spiral, depth, and light — like a tiny universe held in glass.

Each orb is made to order, one at a time, never batch produced. A finished piece can take around two weeks, often with 30–50 failed attempts behind the one that makes the cut. After shaping, it is annealed, checked under different lighting conditions, and released only when clarity, balance, and presence fully come together.

Behind the Piece

CosmoWhirl is built around a quiet pull: the feeling of looking into something small and finding more depth than you expected. The inner spiral feels alive, yet fully contained — a tiny universe you can return to with your eyes, your hand, or your attention.

It is made for people who do not want ordinary jewelry or decor. Wear it close, place it on a desk, or give it to someone who loves space, light, and objects with real presence. However it is kept, the point is the same: it is meant to be looked into, not just looked at.

Materials & Technique

Each orb begins with Czech-made SIMAX borosilicate glass, chosen for its stability under flame. At the center sits a genuine opal, while silver-and-gold fuming and step-by-step color layering build the shifting field of light, depth, and cosmic movement inside the glass.

The piece is shaped in a high-temperature flame fueled by propane and oxygen, reaching around 2000°C. In that heat, the glass is repeatedly heated, turned, and refined by hand. The inner color is not added all at once or left to chance—different colors and effects are introduced gradually, allowing cleaner transitions, deeper layers, and a more controlled final result.

After the Flame

The work is not finished when it leaves the flame. Each piece is placed into an electric kiln for annealing, where internal stress is released and the color field continues to settle, open up, and come together over time.

Each piece is then checked under different lighting conditions. We look for an orb that holds its depth in softer natural light and still feels striking under stronger warm indoor light — where the inner structure reads clearly, the color layers stay alive, and the overall balance feels complete. Not every orb reaches that point. Only the ones that do are released.

Maker & Origin

Glen Wang

Glen Wang is one of the founding artisans behind FolkMake and the maker of the CosmoWhirl Orb. He has spent more than a decade working with flame-shaped glass, and since 2017 he has focused deeply on universe-inspired glass pieces — refining the layered depth, optical balance, and inner movement that define this series.

Each CosmoWhirl Orb is completed 100% by hand, from flame work to final inspection. Glen’s patented methods and long experience help guide the process, but every finished orb still depends on heat, timing, hand control, and repeated attempts. It leaves FolkMake only when the inner world feels clear, balanced, and alive.
